CLEP EXAMS
College Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a credit
by examination test given here in the Testing Center. There are two categories of CLEP: General
and Subject. General Examinations cover material usually taught during
the first two years of college. They include English Composition, Humanities,
College Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and History.
Subject Examinations are more detailed and cover material taught in an
undergraduate course with a similar title.

1. How much does it cost?
The CLEP test itself costs $70 ($10 additional for optional essays, excluding English Composition). This fee must be paid to "CLEP" by check or money order. WCC requires an additional $30 for providing its services. This fee must be paid to Washtenaw Community College by check or money order. So, you will be bringing two separate checks or money orders to the Testing Center on the day you test.
If you are part of the military, the CLEP fee is waived. You must only pay the $30 fee to Washtenaw Community College, by check or money order.
2. How do I arrange to take this test?
Call the Testing Center at (734)477-8550 to set up an appointment. We administer CLEP tests Monday-Friday, 9:00am-2:00pm. You must know which CLEP test you want to take before making this appointment.
3. Where do I take the test?
In the Testing Center. It is located on the 3rd floor of the Student Center building, Room SC 300.
4. What should I study?
You may purchase an official CLEP Study Guide on the CLEP Website.
5. What is the benefit of taking the CLEP test?
You can receive credit for what you already know. You're rewarded for concepts that you've learned either through individual study or experience. It's also a good way to invest your money; compare $60 to hundreds or thousands of dollars in tuition.
6. How else can CLEP be used?
You can move right into advanced classes after taking the prerequisite on CLEP; if you're a few credits short, you can graduate on time by taking as many CLEP tests as you like.
7. When do I receive my score?
After completion of your test you'll receive an instant score report, with the exception of the English Composition essay for which the results will be sent within two weeks of scoring. Scoring of essays takes once a month and is not done by the college.
8. Who does the scoring?
The computer scores all multiple-choice tests. Essays will be evaluated by an instructor.
9. Who grades my essay(s)?
Essays written for the English Composition examination are graded by college professors who are selected by the College Board from the faculty of two and four year institutions nationwide. These professors receive extensive training and have read the policies and procedures thoroughly before reviewing tests. Each essay is read and graded by two or more faculty consultants, which the grading is combined with the multiple choices, and the result is reported as a scaled score.
10. Who grades the optional essays?
Optional essays for CLEP Composition and Literature examinations are evaluated and graded by the college that require them, rather by ETS or the College board. The essay is sent with a copy of your score report to the institute you designated on your answer sheet.
11. How much credit can I receive?
That depends on the college and how they view CLEP tests. It's important to research policies at the colleges you're interested in attending (or the one you're attending). Before you take a test find out if you college even recognizes CLEP credit by examination. Also note that not all colleges award the same amount of credit for individual test. Also some colleges limit the total amount of credit you can earn through CLEP. Individual schools also have different cut off scores.
12. Which CLEP exams are accepted?
That also varies from college to college. You should research the academic policies of your college to determine if the CLEP test will be accepted.
13. Are there any other things I should know?
Some colleges won't grant credit for a CLEP exam if you've already attempted a college-level course closely aligned with the exam. For example, if you successfully complete an English 101 class or a comparable course on another campus, you'll probably not be permitted to receive CLEP credit in that subject also. Some colleges will not permit you to earn CLEP credit for a course that you failed. Also note that some colleges only award CLEP credit to their enrolled students. There are other stipulations that vary from college to college. You'll have to research specific ones.

DANTES EXAMS
Another series of tests are available at the Testing Center for college credit called the "Dantes."
- We offer paper or online tests. For paper test please call ahead to check that we currently have a particular test on file. All online tests must be made by appointment (734-477-8550).
Cost: $70 to Dantes
Money orders only for paper tests.
Credit Card online payment for Online Tests
An additional $30 for the Testing Center, payable by check or money order. Payment is due when you test.
