Coaches/Staff » Mike Glass With the guidance of Mike Glass, WCC's Club Sports program has come a long way from its humble beginnings. In spring 1999, 43 students signed up to play soccer, so Mike purchased five balls from K-Mart and began coaching scrimmages at the college's north athletic fields. Since then, Mike has continually asked students which sports teams they would like to see on campus. "Students should bring their best ideas forward because they will be taken seriously," says Mike. And they have been. At student request, more soccer teams have been added to the roster, and baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, softball, hockey, track and field, and volleyball clubs have evolved. In addition to encouraging student input on team development, Mike strives for full involvement on the playing fields. So long as their grades remain good and they treat referees, coaches and other players with respect, all interested students participate. "My philosophy is that everybody plays," says Mike. "Experienced, skilled players are put into games at crucial points, but no one spends all their time on the bench watching. It's not a win- at-all-costs situation." Formerly a WCC academic advisor, Mike appreciates the rapport he has with players as their coach, allowing him to continue offering them the benefit of his experience in both academic and sports arenas. "Students may feel more comfortable in a sports environment than in other situations," Mike explains. For both the coach and the players, club sports have become win-win situations, and Mike is thrilled to play an integral part in bringing them to WCC students.
