Residential Construction Technology Certificate

WCC prepares you to enter the residential construction trade within one full-time semester, or two part-time semesters.

The core program is designed to teach you all you need to know about the fundamentals to get started in home construction. Before you complete the core curriculum you will have participated in the building of a house, from the ground up, inside our specially equipped facility.

This program prepares you for jobs in a broad range of careers in the residential construction industry, where you will need an understanding of general design and print reading, building systems, the safe use of tools and equipment, materials and the vocabulary of the field.

Here's what you'll learn

This core curriculum will provide you with the knowledge and skills to understand the basic theories and practices needed for success in the residential construction industry. Specific topic and skill areas include:
  • Sketching and general blueprint reading

  • Personal safety and the use of hand tools, portable power tools and stationary power equipment

  • Foundations and flatwork, concrete and reinforcing materials

  • Floor systems, windows and exterior doors

  • Stair construction, interior and exterior finish systems, roofing, gutter and downspout applications

  • Drywall

  • Cabinet installation

  • Trim

What can I do?

Residential construction workers perform all kinds of jobs, from small repairs to home additions and remodeling. With experience you may be involved in the construction of a complete home, and later advance into supervision.

Who do I work for?

Construction firms, general contractors and sub-contracting firms in the residential construction industry and building supply firms. In addition many residential contractors opt to get their builder's license and work for themselves, employing a number of specialty crews.

How much can I make?

The average income ranges from $10 to $15/hr at entry level and more after a couple of years experience. Supervisory and managerial positions in residential construction can pay an average of $60,000 a year.

What is my career path?

With experience and further study you can move into specialty areas including, cabinetry and millwork, commercial property maintenance, facilities management administration and field supervision. WCC offers advanced certificates in these fields.
