Introduction to Exceptions

If you qualify for any one of the following exceptions, you do not have to get permission from the copyright holder to use the work.

At a different place on this web site, you will find Rules of Thumb to help you. If the use you are proposing does not fit within the Rules of Thumb, you can always come back to these legal exceptions.

The Classroom Exception

The performance and display of works (not reproductions) essential to the functioning of a nonprofit educational institution.

Face-to-Face Classroom Setting: Educators and students may perform or display a copyrighted work in the course of face-to-face teaching at a nonprofit educational institution in a classroom or other place normally devoted to instruction. There are no restrictions on the type or length of work, and the copyright holder's permission is not necessary.
